On Jan 28th 2004 the Beach Ultimate world changed in a moment with this simple letter written by a simple man.  A teacher at Currier High (and Middle School) and at the time Director of the CUF (Currier Ultimate Federation).

Currier Island, Micronesia
28 Jan 2004

Dear Sir or Madam,

This letter is to certify that the Currier Island government wishes to be represented at the World Beach Ultimate Championships by the petitioning party led by Ivan Zoltan Cestero.  The Currier Island chain, while not a large nation has a long and proud athletic tradition. Our islands have long been feared throughout the Pacific for the strength and endurance of our sailors and swimmers. Unfortunately, the recent achievements of our athletes have yet to be celebrated internationally as we are not currently recognized by the International Olympic Committee. While our petition with the IOC is still pending, we seek alternate venues to display the pride and joy of our people. The morale of the Currerian people are tied tightly to our athletes and we, as a nation, feel slighted by our lack of access to the world stage.

ImageUltimate Frisbee was first introduced to our island in the 1984 by a much beloved Peace Corps volunteer named Eric Etu. The official "program" was launced by myself four years ago. The ultimate frisbee phenomenon immediately took root and became a national obsession. Though my own personal charms and attraction might have had something to do with this, there is no doubt that Ultimate has blossomed on the island. For obvious reasons, beach ultimate is the form of choice given our country's environment. All our players are familiar with the UPA's rules and keep abreast of the latest ammendments and additions to the rule book, which we have printed out and keep in storage at the island's high school where I work. We hold the Annual National Currier Island Championships every summer to coincide with the Ultimate World's tournament. The tournament is open to all interested parties, but our island's lack of a modern airfield prevents us from hosting any international competition. Thus the same team has won nationals three years running, but nobody really minds.

We ask that you allow the Currerian Beach Ultimate team to participate in your tournament. While not all members of the team are native Currerians, they all have strong and tangible ties to our island and our community. We are certain that Ivan Zoltan & Co. embody the spirit of our people and we are proud to have them representing our nation in the World Beach Ultimate Championship. I have met at length with the honorable President Emile Neilsten and his excellency Archbishop Ware on the topic and we have come to the same conclusion. Further it is our humble opinion that your tournament would not qualify as a legitimate "World Championship" without representation from the
Currerian Island Nation.

We expect and appreciate that you accept our proposal. May the Spirit of the Game guide your sails to friendly shores.

Sincerely,
Minh Le
